Luang Pu Thuad Gold Ratchawadi Enamel Sema Medallion — Wat Chang Hai, Pattani
A highly distinctive Luang Pu Thuad issue noted for its Buddhist artistry, unusual construction and rarity. Its defining feature is a two-part gold construction: an enamelled gold Sema base combined with a separately mounted gold Luang Pu Thuad figure derived from a gold teardrop-shaped Roon Thun Klao medallion, B.E. 2530 (1987).
The gold teardrop medallion was carefully trimmed around its surrounding field, leaving only the gold Luang Pu Thuad figure. A mounting post was then fitted to the reverse before the figure was secured onto the Gold Ratchawadi Enamel Sema base, creating a pronounced high-relief and sculptural appearance.
The Ratchawadi enamel employs four colours — red, green, white and blue — with two principal field variations: green and red. An “U” (อุ) code punch appears on the sangkhati of the Luang Pu Thuad figure, while the reverse carries sacred yantra inscriptions in a form also seen on several celebrated Luang Pu Thuad medallion issues.
The recorded production is only 22 pieces, made as special commemorative pieces for keepsake and collection.
Its historical attribution is particularly interesting. The Luang Por Thuad reference book associates the medallion with the B.E. 2533 (1990) Roon Sang Chedi issue. First-hand information from Ajarn Bandit Kornkanok, who was directly involved in its production, indicates that the medallions were made before B.E. 2533 and were subsequently included in the Roon Sang Chedi consecration ceremony in B.E. 2533.
Collector’s Note: Gold Roon Thun Klao teardrop medallion, B.E. 2530 → surrounding gold field removed, retaining the gold Luang Pu Thuad figure → mounting post fitted and figure secured onto the Gold Ratchawadi Enamel Sema base → completed medallion included in the B.E. 2533 Roon Sang Chedi consecration ceremony.
